From Whispers in the Loggia:
‘Today marks the 33rd anniversary of the death of perhaps American Catholicism’s most consequential product of all – the epic preacher who completed the struggle of three centuries and shepherded the faith into the mainstream of the nation’s life: the one, the only, now-Venerable Fulton J. Sheen.’
Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen dates America’s moral tipping point: ’8:15 in the morning, the 6th of August, 1945.’
In 1945, when some American politicians decided it was ‘ok’ to kill anybody in the pursuit of their good cause, then well, the door was opened to any innocent human being, being killed for any ‘personal good cause’, including psychological health, as is the case today in abortion. It didn’t begin at 1945, but it was a huge moment which signaled a massive change in American thinking, and perhaps was a turning point for America losing its soul. Today, in the pursuit of ‘national security’, innocents are still bombed by American drones in foreign lands, and their life’s value is calculated and weighed against other ‘goods’ by a computer algorithm in the CIA. It’s a tyranny of sorts, where machines and efficiency dominate human life, ethical views, and a true outlook on the world.
Venerable Fulton Sheen, pray for America, and pray for us.
